    On libraries
Hey, check it out, good news.

Also, I totally keep forgetting to write about this. About a zillion years ago (okay, in April), the ALA released its State of America's Libraries report. Highlights (direct quotations):
    • Americans continue to check out more than 2 billion items each year from their public libraries, and more and more people make use of libraries' educational and social resources. The average user takes out seven-plus books a year, but patrons also go to their libraries to borrow DVDs, learn new computer skills, conduct job searches, and participate in the activities of local community organizations. Average bill to the taxpayer for this remarkable range of public services: $31 a year, about the cost of one hardcover book.
    • In a 2007 study, 73 percent of public libraries reported that they were the only source of free public access to computers and the Internet in their communities. Surveyed libraries said the three Internet services most critical to their community were online educational resources and databases for K-12 students (67.7 percent), services for job-seekers (44 percent), and computer and Internet skills training (29.8 percent).
    • A report issued late in 2007 by Indiana University's Kelley School of Business concludes that public libraries are a good value, serving as "an important channel for literacy, education and information." The report estimated the total market value of goods and services delivered by the state's public libraries to be $629.9 million, a return of $2.38 on each dollar of investment.
    • Libraries serving populations of fewer than 25,000 people comprise almost 80 percent of all public libraries.
    • State and local/regional budget cuts continued to bedevil school library media centers in 2007. Nationally, school library expenditures per pupil decreased to $13.67 in 2003-2004 from $19.14 in 1999-2000, a drop of almost 30 percent, according to data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), a division of the U.S. Department of Education. The percentage of public schools with school library media centers has risen slightly in the past four years, but the vast majority of states have decreased their spending on books and other materials and staff, the NCES said.
There's more interesting stuff in there, but those were just the bits I found particularly noteworthy.

So libraries are widely-used, important to the community, a good investment, and a good value for the services provided (awesome), but they're increasingly underfunded and undervalued (not awesome). Support your local public library! It's good for you and the community.

    Women in comedy, abridged
I've been wanting to write up a big long post about women in comedy, but I think it basically boils down to this:
    • There aren't enough women in comedy. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are both visible and talented, which helps a little, but there is still a problem.
    • I suspect this is another consequence of girls being raised to be "nice," since a lot of humor involves poking fun at other people, or at the very least drawing attention to yourself. Can we please stop raising girls to be nice and instead raise them to be awesome?
    • Another example: Casey and I watched an episode of Last Comic Standing the other night, and the teaser for the next episode (which aired... last night, I think?) showed all of the comics being taken to the Playboy mansion. They must have assumed that by the third episode, there'd only be dudes left in the competition, but there's still one girl!
    • While I really do enjoy Judd Apatow's movies, it seems like women are always the same in them: they're either these clueless wife/mother figures or they're girlfriends and their primary role is to "civilize" the immature men in the movie, whether the guys want it or not. When they do want it, the women then move into the wife/mother role and are mature and never have fun, and when they don't, they're controlling bitches. Can't women please be something else? There are girls who are "one of the guys," I swear, and without pretense, too. (This is not an entirely accurate assessment of his movies; I am exaggerating a little.)
    • Gender roles blow.
I think that's all. Mostly I'm just really grouchy about this.

    623-
Well, it looks as if the Buffy experiment didn't work. In fact, that seems to be a theme of the Buffy week so far. I haven't been able to find bands that successfully parlayed a Buffy appearance and I wasn't able to pull off the experiment. I'm beginning to feel like despite the 8th season in comic form, there is still a disconnect. I look at fans of Harry Potter and they have bands that sing songs of HP. Are there Buffy bands out there. Not that I've found and I've looked. Where is the musical growth in the Buffyverse? A mention of music in the comics is cool but it's not the same. There's no more theme song, no Bronze....It's almost sad. More on this tomorrow:

Song 623- "Bohemian Like You" by the Dandy Warhols
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUdJUzAIu8w

Why that song? Because it's on the 2nd Buffy soundtrack "Radio Sunnydale"

And here it is live (so you can look at Zia! :D )

    Dan Deacon
Dan Deacon is a talented musician. He's gotten so easy hate recently, though. Which is weird. Because it has nothing to do with him. His following has built up over the past year or two, and its composed entirely of indescribably annoying hipsters.

Here's an example of a Dan Deacon live show nowadays, his fat sweaty body crowded over by sweaty awful hipsters in ironic hats and glasses.

Why? Why does every Dan Deacon show look like this? I prefer the old Dan Deacon, like the skinny neurotic guy who appeared on a local newscast.

    Movie questions
What movie have you seen the most times in the theater? How many times?
Thrice: Jurassic Park. Possibly the South Park movie also.
Twice: Amelie, The Truman Show, a few others

What was the last movie you walked out of in the theater?
Never walked out of a movie, but came close during Godzilla 1998, and the live-action Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

What is the first movie you remember seeing in a theater?
Benji: The Hunted. Batteries Not Included. But now that I think of it, maybe the Sesame Street movie, Follow That Bird, which I believe I saw in a theater at the age of 3.

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
    The Virgin Suicides.

Have you ever dressed up as a movie character for Halloween? If so, who?
    Nope.

What was the first R-rated movie you ever saw? Were you allowed or did you sneak?
Either Caddyshack or the original Police Academy. Rented them both. My parents didn't figure it was R rated. Also, there's a funny story about how I rented Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and my parents remembered a scene where Steve Martin curses a lot. So they told me after the scene where he slides down an embankment, I had to come get them so they could fast-forward through the offending scene. Well, I watched the cursing scene first, rewound it, then asked them to fast-forward it.

Star Wars (orig. trilogy) or Lord of the Rings?
    Star Wars

    Pacino or De Niro?
    De Niro. Pacino is overrated.

Titanic…did it suck or was it great?
    Not great. Didn't suck either.

    What's your take on Cassavetes?
I don't know who that is.

    Favorite John Hughes character?
Pre-makeover Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club.

Which movie gives you a boner (or makes you tingle)?
Homeward Bound 2: Lost In San Francisco

Which movie always makes you cry like the big puss you are?
Always? The Shawshank Redemption, but I've only seen it once.

What's the furthest you've ever gotten in a movie theater? (i.e, second base…)
I will not do that in a theater.

Speaking of sports metaphors, what's your favorite sports movie?
I honestly cannot think of any. Can we consider Horse Feathers a sports movie, maybe?

    Favorite
    (a)… teen movie?

I'm not sure what qualifies a movie for that title, but Superbad if it counts.

    (b)…Quentin Tarantino movie?
Oh man, Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill Part 1. I'd have to see Pulp Fiction again.

    (c)…Bill Murray movie?
    What About Bob?

    (d)…romantic comedy?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

    (e)…gangster movie?
Either The Sopranos or The Dark Knight, but probably those don't count.

    (f)…horror movie?
    Evil Dead 2

    (g)…made for TV movie?
    The 7 Up Series

    (h)…director?
Living: PT Anderson. Dead: Stanley Kubrick.

    (i)…drug movie?
Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle

Which movie have you seen already but will never, ever, ever watch again?
Aforementioned Godzilla 1998, and Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Which movie are you embarrassed to really like?
I still feel slightly embarassed about the What About Bob thing.

Which movie should be remade ASAP?
Birth of a Nation, directed by Kevin Smith.

What happened to _____? He used to be so damn funny!
Jim Carrey. Not so funny anymore, but I still like him as an actor.

For the love of everything that's sacred, please someone stop ______ from making another movie!
    Baz Luhrmann

Which movie do all your friends love but you think is whatevs?
    Brazil. Almost Famous.

Which movie do you love but all your friends think is whatevs?
    Gummo.

If you could hump/date/marry any movie character, who would it be?
    Character? What a weird proposition.

    Best movie ever?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Book you wish would be made into a movie, and who would direct it?
The only books I read are movie novelizations.

    622-
Buffy week rolls on. So far I've looked at music in Season 8 as well as bands who have appeared in Buffy. Both looks were fine and dandy but at the end of the day, it's the music that appeared in the show that is really the most interesting part. I'm going to do an experiment here. I'm sitting in my dinner room alongside my wife and housemate who are both big Buffy fans and have watched the episodes far more times than I. I wonder if I play a song from the show will it immediately spark some kind of reaction. I know it works whenever I play "Chinese Burn" by Curve but how will it work with a song that isn't as noteworthy. I'm going to shoot for a song from an episode I know that they know well. Okay, I tried with some that dog. Their song "Never Say Never" is in an episode from Season 4. I know the song but I can't place a scene it was in. And neither did the unknowing participants in the experiment. Same thing when I play "Boom Swagger Boom" by the Murder City Devils. But I'm not giving up on seeing if I can spark some attachment to Buffy background music. I tried with Laika and that didn't work but I must say they have begun kind of tapping along, so it's hitting some subliminal. I know they can't just be enjoying because the Laika song sucks ass. Okay, I'm trying with a Bush song. Bush, well-known band and the song was kind of noticeable. And the subjects are frozen in place. Yes, I think we have a subliminal touch. It's as if they are trying to remember where they have heard the song from. Good. I'm going for the kill now, songs from the Tara death episode. Let's see if any of these hit. I must say that the Alien Ant Farm song from that episode was bad ass. Dammit, even playing Sarah McLachlan's "Prayer of St. Francis" which is definitely noteable doesn't get much more than a stir. But hey, if I'm going to continue watching the subjects. If they decide to watch Buffy Season 6 tomorrow, then I know I have succeeded....

    Some things about Charlotte-Shelburne-Burlington
We camped in a lean-to on the side of Mt. Philo in Charlotte, Vermont this part weekend. The ranger was some super-cool laid back dude. We wanted to buy firewood, so we went to the booth at the bottom of the mountain. The girl there could only give us a ticket, which we were supposed to give to the ranger at the top of the mountain. When we drove up and told him we had a ticket to give him, he shrugged his shoulders and said "Okay." He was kind of like the cool teacher in school who loosens all the rules, except he was a park ranger. He said "We have a loose policy on what is an armload of firewood" and basically let us take as much as we want. Also, I was hell of jealous of his job because he gets to live in this house at the top of the mountain, and only has to worry about 9 campsites, most of which are probably unoccupied at any given time. And he just hangs out at this house with his dog, and his friends sleep over sometimes.

That's the view from the top of Mt. Philo. Click for larger.

The Shelburne Museum is worth is exorbitant admission price. Electra Havemayer Webb was a rich lady who liked to buy stuff, with the vague idea of turning all that stuff into a museum one day. So this is a smorgasboard of a museum showcasing all her collections. The "museum" encompasses 40 buildings spread of 45 acres. As an example of the kind of layout the place has, there is an old Colonial style home that is filled with nothing but duck decoys. Many of the buildings came from off-site, either torn apart and put back together, or transported in one piece. Under the One Piece heading, you can file the riverboat Ticonderoga, which was hauled over ground two miles to get from the lake to the museum grounds, a process that took over 2 months. There's a train with a luxurious interior on a partial railroad, and a railroad station. There's a lighthouse.

    From the old-timey apothecary shop...

I could use some Cera flava. How about you?

Also at the Shelburne Museum was the Kalkin House, which is a two-story, rectangular, metal building. And from a certain angle it looked familiar. But I didn't put my finger on why until I got home and looked it up.

The Kalkin House was designed by Adam Kalkin, and was constructed out of cargo containers. I've read articles about the architect, and seen pictures of the house, and remember thinking that the two-story curtains in the front must be the biggest curtains in the world. So it was a little strange that I was actually in the building, but didn't realize it at the time.
We saw Batman Returns 2 on Sunday. Packed theater. Great movie. But you already knew both of those things. Heath Ledger as The Joker was the most disturbing villain since Sir Anthony as Hannibal. It's all in the lips. But I still might prefer Danny DeVito, the most perfect casting idea ever in the original Batman Returns, as Oswald Cobblepot.

There was horrifying plush art inside the Kalkin House. Kind of incongruous to the rest of the museum.

If you've read this far, I'm about to make it worth your while. This is the best part of all of Burlington! If you drive down Flynn Ave in South Burlington, you will find the WORLD'S TALLEST FILE CABINET in a vacant lot between houses and a commercial building. Thirty-eight drawers tall, by my count.

I wish I had more to tell you about this monument to organization, but there's not much info on who built it or why. It just is.

    Just a few things
I recently checked out Brothel: Mustang Ranch and Its Women from the library and really enjoyed it. It was just the right combination of facts and anecdotes and it didn't stray far from its topic. Very interesting.

I forgot to post this when I found it: my boss received this crazy letter at some point (something I printed was on the back of it). People are so weird!

    Also:
    • The US won't let people come here if they have HIV. Other countries that do this include Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Russia, and seven others. God I hope that bill passes to rescind that. It's easier to get in if you have ebola! How ridiculous!
    • Who would ever want this? And more to the point, who would pay $300 for it?
    • One of the House members who's using Twitter is John Culberson. He posts way too often and occasionally says hilarious things, like when he gleefully posted this and then immediately after posted this. I'm still glad he's using Twitter, though, and I think more representatives in Congress should.
    • Do you know how easy it is for someone to break into your house?
    • I thought this was an interesting article on McCain and his political stances.
    • Did you see they're reinstating Basic LJ accounts? I guess they finally gave in to the uncharitable, crazy, sockpuppety blackmailers trying to intimidate them and shut down their business. Thumbs up!
    • This video positively breaks my heart. And did you know that Unilever got all of this great press for their "real women" campaign with Dove, but they're also one of the major conglomerates selling skin-lightening products in India? Eff you, Unilever.
    • And finally, George Bush thinks everything is awesome.

    The first half of vacation
Okay, so! The drive here went well. I left at 3.15 in the morning, which kind of sucked, but it meant I got to stop in Pennsylvania and see the lovely Vicki and Emily for lunch. Also, you guys, have I told you that they're moving to Indy when I am and I am so pumped about this? Anyway, I got into Connecticut a little later than I meant to, but still in time to help Casey finish getting ready for people to arrive for a night of video games and general hanging out.

On Saturday we spent the whole day just lazing around the apartment watching television and playing video games and enjoying each other's company. It was nice.

Onnn Sunday we... did some more lazy stuff, probably, and maybe went grocery shopping, I think, and then went to see The Dark Knight (spoilery stuff under here) ) with his usual Tuesday night dinner group and joined them for drinks and food afterward. Walking around White Plains at night was kind of creepy and I'm not sure why!

On Monday, Casey had to go to work (boo), and I spent most of the day lying around reading and playing Wii Fit, which I'm really enjoying. Some of it is so hard (has anyone actually completed the tightrope thing? Because I don't think I'll ever be able to), but most of it is just right, or just right to push me to try to get better (like some of the yoga poses. The Triangle hurrrrrts), and I love tracking data. Yay! When Casey got back, we... watched Bender's Big Score, which I hadn't seen, and probably some more television (I'm caught up on Venture Bros now and we've been watching That Mitchell and Webb Look). I dunno--we just spend a lot of time relaxing and it makes me really happy.

Yesterday was Tuesday and I spent another day not really doing anything (yes, it's vacation, but I have a lot I want to do before I move down to Indy), but I did start to get a better idea of my schedule for the first week of work, and then Casey and I went out for dinner and I had some of the most delicious pasta I've ever had and then we went to see Wall-E which was so funny and so sweet and such a great, great movie. Wow. I think Pixar is pretty incredible, and I'm really glad they're around.

Tonight we're ordering pizza and tomorrow we're having tacos and probably going to see Hellboy 2 and then on Friday we're going to Aaron's and on Saturday we're going to New Jersey and on Sunday we're going to New York City and on Monday I'm going home, boo. But then I have Tuesday through Friday to get stuff done in Fort Wayne and then on Saturday I move to Indy and the Monday after that I start work! And then school starts a few weeks later! Yeahhhhh. :D

    Ow.
I had hoped to never write this in my blog a second time, but...

I accidentally stabbed myself in the face today.

I have a peg board on the wall where I hang tools. In a fit of tidying, I leaned down to pick up something from the floor, and scraped the side of my face on one of the long pegs. I thought it would bleed a lot more than it did, but it sure hurts a lot worse than I expected. Perhaps wearing glasses will help cover it ... or just make it hurt more. I'm quite relieved it wasn't my eyeball.

Also on the bright side, I will look bad-ass for a while and get to make up elaborate lies about my wound. And how many people can say, "Damn it, I stabbed myself in the face again."?

Pics or it didn't happen... )

In other news, my parents are in town visiting. I am lucky to love them and like them.

In other news, my business was slow and is now picking back up. I'm a little scared actually, I had quite a lazy summer!

In other news, I thought of a new business that could kick so much ass. Am currently buying equipment and making plans.

In other news, I had Ethiopian food for the first time last week and it was disgusting. There are only two rules for Cynthia's Adventures In Dining:
    1. Try everything twice. The first bite you can't judge because you brought assumptions. The second bite is when you can really decide what to think.

    2. Tell me what it is after I eat it. Some foods I can't help but pre-dislike, so I'd rather not know.
Turns out, rule number two sucks, because gorda-gorda is RAW BEEF CHUNKS and nobody warned me -- I nearly spat it into my napkin, I was so squicked. I accidentally found out the other bowl was liver and tripe and took a bite anyway. Good thing the event was a charity dinner for rural drinking water, so we adventured for a good cause. They had a vegetarian tray that I really would have been happier with, but when trying something new, I want to really get my teeth in, meat and all.

The meal was through my favorite Meetup, a big group of foodies that gather a few times a month for huge samplers in unusual cuisines or fun themes. Usually they are delicious, but turns out -- Ethiopian's not for me. This weekend we're going to a Mexican tire store parking lot where the white catering vans are known to park, and locals bring guitars and cervezas for an impromptu fiesta. Goat tacos for everyone!

Horse kicks Ralph Lauren in stomach
My laptop has been officially retired. For the last week or more, I've only been online when I can snake Audra's work computer for a few minutes. I hope, before school starts, to trip on the corner of an MSI Wind poking out of a patch of dirt. I could subsequently dig it up and dust it off and put it to good use. Due to the passive influence of my dad, I am thinking of even maybe letting it be a Linux machine and not wussing out and going running to cry in the skirts of XP. I'm a grown up, right?

Speaking of my dad, he has been visiting with us since Friday! I may have mentioned before that he is a native Edmontonian, having grown up almost entirely within a few blocks of the apartment Audra and I have lived in for the last year. We have been touring around the city, so he can see how it is and tell us how it was. On the weekend we took an overnight trip to the farm his sister and her husband live on and operate. My 67-year-old uncle is a superhero, casually mentioning the herculean tasks he undertakes as a matter of course like they were nothing, since to him they almost are. My aunts (there was an extra one this time, I met my dad's youngest sister for the first time this weekend!!) are lively and kind and one of them rides a motorcycle and one of them is a domestic impresario. When the youngest confessed that my dad was her favourite brother, I felt kind of a surprising surge of pride in him. Not everybody gets to be someone's favourite brother! (I managed to cheat my way into that exclusive circle by having only female siblings - suckers)

Audra and Dad have always got along great and the conversations have been scintillating. I only wish Mom could have made it out, too, but hopefully she's making the most of getting a bit of rare solitude back home. Last night Dad met our friends Brad and Morgan and Jessica and tonight it was Kelley and Erin and Ryan and it's not everyone you want to make sure your dad meets, but I have the lucky circumstance of not only having a cool dad, but cool friends. So basically everything was great about the last few days. Dad goes home tomorrow evening and we are kind of in denial about it. Audra especially - I'm more stoic, being a boy.

We're selling the furniture out from under us. We've sold the record shelves, the bed frame, the kitchen table, a book shelf, my turntable desk, the dressers... it makes for a messy existence, but not for long. Everything else we're boxing up and shipping out in less than a week. Dudes we are moving across the country again in less than a week. We can hardly believe it, and neither can our cats.

I don't know what else to say right now except that I think you're great and I hope you're well. Catch you in a little while.

    621-
Buffy week continues. According to the wonderous wikipedia, the Bronze appears in 66 episodes of BtVS. Not only was it a great plot device for getting the characters together (bring them to the club to either hang out or to see a band play) but it was another way to bring music into the show. The Bronze featured appearances from artists such as Cibo Matto, Aimee Mann and Michelle Branch. It was also a place where lesser known bands could get some notice. I have often wondered...so what happened to that band after appearing on Buffy. Could a band appearing on Buffy parlay that into more success. Let's find out....

Well, I looked at a bunch of names of bands that appeared in Buffy on the Bronze stage and I threw the names into YouTube. Things I learned- 1) Searching for "Belly Love" will not bring you to the band of that name and 2) Bands who appeared at the Bronze were not able to parlay it into a lot of notice. There was nothing for Superfine, Belly Love or a bunch of other bands. But one band did have some YouTube videos and that was Velvet Chain. Velvet Chain appeared in the episode "Never Kill A Boy On The First Date". It seems after that appearance, Velvet Chain became big fans of the show and became a part of the fan community. And by doing that they were able to help build a fan base alongside the show.

I would post a song from them here but honestly, I'm not a fan. But they did get to appear on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack and that soundtrack did have some stuff I did enjoy. Take for instance, this song by Hepburn (which is on the soundtrack BUT never appeared in the show). But at least it's got a Buffy themed music video.

And instead of a live video, here's a Buffy fan vid (Makes sense during Buffy week) using the song:
