Day 592 - Tool - Stinkfist

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.

DAY 592
Tool - Stinkfist
From "Ænima."

When this music video was in heavy rotation on MTV, it was referred to as 'Track #1' because the title, and the percieved lyrical content of the song were considered too offensive.

There is some debate over whether the lyrics to 'Stinkfist' have a deeper meaning than what's on the surface (no pun intended), but the band has wisely left interpretation up to the listener.

However, few would debate that this song is intense, because it is.

My friend Tracy pointed out something really cool about this song a while back. Towards the end of the song, take note of how the guitar blasts and vocals alternate and then come back in unison for the second set of words:

[GUITAR BLAST]
I'LL!
[GUITAR BLAST]
KEEP!
[GUITAR BLAST]
DIGGING!
[Sweet guitar riff] Till
[GUITAR BLAST AND VOCAL IN UNISON] I!
[GUITAR BLAST AND VOCAL IN UNISON] FEEL!
[GUITAR BLAST AND VOCAL IN UNISON] SOMETHING!

You may not catch subtle things like that at first, and it can make a song that much cooler with repeat listens. More than a few times I have read that Tool is a band that throws in all sorts of cool things that aren't noticable at first.

Some might find the imagery to be distrurbing, but feel free to Click here to watch the music video on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

It was nearly unavoidable on the radio. We had a 45 single of the song, and I just about wore it out. It's catchy, fun and it WILL get stuck in your head.

Haven't heard 'Break My Stride'? Well, maybe you've heard some of the songs from No Doubt's 'Tragic Kingdom' album. Matthew Wilder produced the album for No Doubt, and I was recently thinking about how much it shows. Listen to 'Break My Stride' and then listen to 'Spiderwebs' or 'Just a Girl'. Sure, the songs feature different performers from very different eras, but it just seems to make sense when you hear that there's a connection.

Apparently, he also has some other notable credits to his name that I was unaware of until this evening. He has worked with Christina Aguilera, and Kelly Clarkston, and he was nominated for an Academy Award for Original Music Score (along with David Zippel and Jerry Goldsmith) for his contributions to Disney's 'Mulan'.

Not bad for a guy that's probably best known as a 'One Hit Wonder'.

Click here to watch a performance of the song from the TV show 'Solid Gold' on YouTube.

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

The Half Racks have disbanded

The subject says it all. The Half Racks have disbanded, and we will not be playing a farewell show. We have parted on good terms.

Justin Combustion has been wanting to move to Portland for some time now, and he's going to do that now that he has sold his house. We had hoped to play a farewell show or two, but balancing everyday life, school and preparing for the move has proven to be very chaotic without adding practices and shows to his schedule. Something had to give, and in this case it was the band.

'Coffee Now' will not be released as a CD, but free mp3s of the songs will be made available when they are finished. I'll try to make the completion of this album a higher priority in the near future.

On behalf of the band, I would like to thank anyone that ever came to a show to see us play. It was fun to share the stage with these guys.

If you'd like to keep up with any of our future musical escapades, feel free to check out our individual Myspace profiles:

Glenn Case
Justin Combustion
Will Brock

Thanks again, y'all. It's been a good run.

:)

ROCK!

Glenn Case

For me it would be worth attending just to see De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, MF Doom and Rakim but there's a ton of other legendary acts that will be performing. Unfortunately, I don't believe I will be attending, and I'll probably kick myself for years to come.

I first heard 'Gettin' Up' on the Rock the Bells website and it blew me away. In my opinion, this track is right up there with the greatest output from A Tribe Called Quest. I can repeatedly listen to this without getting sick of it.

Now I'm excited to hear how 'The Renaissance' turns out. There is no artwork available as I type these words, but the album is supposed to be released this year. Honestly, I can't remember the last time when I was this hyped up to hear ANY upcoming album in any genre.

Click here to listen to it on YouTube
Click here to go to Q-Tip's Myspace page

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

I recognized the band name because I saw the video for 'Old Timer' on Beavis and Butthead long ago.

I liked the songs on 'Retreat From the Sun' so much that I went back the next day in the hopes of finding other CDs by the band. Thankfully, I ran across a copy of 'Totally Crushed Out!' so now I only need to track down the self-titled debut if I want to collect all three of the albums they made before breaking up in September of 1997.

It was also a pleasant surprise to learn that Petra Haden was part of the band. I had heard of Petra because of thesixtyone.com, where I was introduced to her brilliant cover of 'God Only Knows'.

Anna Waronker wrote all of the songs on 'Retreat From the Sun', and my research indicates that she had originally intended to record the songs as a solo album.

Click here a live version of the song on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

At the price of two for a dollar, it becomes worthwhile to go ahead and pick out choices that merely SEEM interesting.

By my logic, a band is probably pretty cool if they choose to name themselves after Paul Bunyan's equally gigantic companion. In this case, I was right. I popped 'People' into my CD player and my smile continued to widen as 'Can't Stand Up' filled the room.

Click here to watch the music video on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

I vaguely remember going roller skating with classmates, and I became energized when this song came on. I played 'air harmonica', and promptly fell on my ass.

Yet, I still love this song.

At different points in my life I have had my voice compared to Sean, Julian and finally John Lennon. Those are the two luxuries I found myself being thankful for this morning. Sure, I could probably live without them, but would I want to? No.

I bought 'Stranger Than Fiction' because of 21st Century Digital Boy and 'Infected'. It took a while for me to warm up to the rest of the album, because I wasn't expecting the faster tempos. Later I came to realize that my outlook had been backwards. The two songs that made me pay attention to Bad Religion were the songs that were a drastic change from their other material, instead of the other way around.

Click here to watch the music video on YouTube
Click here to watch a live performance on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

Day 583 - Heavy D. and the Boyz - Gyrlz, They Love Me

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.

DAY 583
Heavy D. and the Boyz - Gyrlz, They Love Me
From "Big Tyme"

Heavy D is the self proclaimed 'Overweight Lover'. According to Wii Fit and the BMI that registered during my 'body test' today, I can officially call myself overweight too.

I am right on the border of 'Normal' and 'Overweight' according to the Body Mass Index with my height measuring 6'1", and weighing in at just under 190 pounds. I crossed the threshold into the latter territory for the first time today.

I have read that you can't fully trust the BMI, because muscle weighs more than fat, but let's be real here: I'm no bodybuilder. No, this is a sign of age catching up to me a bit. I used to have a high metabolism, and I could eat just about anything without gaining a pound. That's no longer the case, and it hasn't been for a while now. I've already been noticing that I can't fit into some of the pants that used to be loose on me.

Of course, it doesn't help that I have a sit-down job, and I don't exactly go out of my way to exercise often. So, I suppose I am going to need to watch my diet a little better, and set aside more time for exercise if I don't want to delve further into the realm of 'overweight'.

Click here to listen to the album version on YouTube.
Day 582 - Simon and Garfunkel - My Little Town

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. This blog can be found at Blogger, Livejournal, and Myspace for your convenience.

DAY 582
Simon and Garfunkel - My Little Town
From "The Best of Simon & Garfunkel"

It was bad enough to be cut from 40 hours a week down to 32 hours, but now my employer has cut all part-timers to a maximum of 31 and 3/4 hours a week. I have informed my boss that I am going to be looking for a better primary job, and he understands. It's a corporate thing. The idea of going back to filling out job applications and submitting resumes irritates me to no end, but what can you do?

Sometimes the answer is going out and making senseless little purchases to make yourself feel better. As of last night, I am the proud owner of a very reasonably priced DVD box set of Saturday Night Live's first season. I have only watched the first two episodes thus far, but I am already enjoying it immensely.

The second episode was hosted by Paul Simon, and it's the strangest episode of SNL that I have ever seen, because the format was very different from what the show has evolved into. Musical performances dominated that particular episode. There's a few Paul Simon solo songs, a Randy Newman performance, a couple of songs by Phoebe Snow and even an Art Garfunkel solo performance.

For me the highlight was seeing Paul Simon sharing a stage with Art Garfunkel for what had been the first time in over 3 years at that time. I learned something unique about 'My Little Town' today. The song was originally released on two different albums! You can find it on Paul Simon's 'Still Crazy After All These Years' and on Art Garfunkel's 'Breakaway'.

I'm glad that they performed the song on the show, because I might have forgotten all about it. See, I bought a box set of the 'complete recordings of Simon and Garfunkel' semi-recently but this song was not included, because it technically wasn't recorded until after their 5 albums were released by Columbia. I guess it wasn't quite so complete after all. Lame. Great song 'though. Especially that epic chorus.

Click here to listen to the song on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

Blame the winning combination of the driving beat, the cool interplay between the guitar and bass, and the way the vocal effortlessly switches gears between melodic and snarky.

It has been said that John Lydon wrote 'Rise' about the issue of apartheid in Africa.

Click here to watch the music video on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

All over the place at the moment.

I had a wedding DJ gig last weekend, I have a wedding DJ gig this weekend (on my birthday) and I'm playing bass guitar with my old band Buffalo Jones at a wedding the weekend after that. In between those times I have a couple of gigs, and Rachael and I are still competing in Nur Ein. I've also got some songs that I have been asked to record. Never mind the housework that I really need to help to catch up on.

In short, I've been busy and I'm going to be busy for the next couple of weeks. That's really not a bad thing, but it can make things somewhat chaotic at times.

This song fits the 'Let's get things in order and kick some ass' vibe that I need to psyche myself into.

Click here to watch the music video on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

For those who don't know, I am listing my 10,000 favorite songs in this blog. This will take just under 30 years from start to completion. I guess I still do.

It makes the list because of it's blissful chord structure, strange lyrics and catchy hooks. This song would be ridiculous in the hands of many artists, but Green Gartside and company make it work. I love this band. Especially the songs from this album.

Click here to watch the music video on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

ELO was responsible for some of the greatest songs to come out of the mid to late 70's and early 80's.

I thought of this song because of it's title tonight, and it deserves an explanation, but I have a wedding to prepare for this weekend. I'm actually an ordained minister now, and I am going to perform my first (and likely my last) ceremony this weekend. I'm also the wedding DJ, so I have a LOT of things to pack and prepare.

Tomorrow I will try to write a seperate blog entry about the show my band played tonight. We played a great set, the other band played a great set, and a VERY small handful of people were there to see it.

I appreciate the few people that were there, but it's actually a very embarrassing experience, and the primary reason that I am going to look forward to a time when I don't play out very often. I ENJOY playing shows but it sucks when it constantly feels like I should be apologizing to the venue and the other bands because MY band can't draw a crowd.

I will say that people like me are part of the problem, because we don't go out and watch many live shows. But more about that tomorrow.

Tim? Chris? Thank you for being the two familiar faces I could look out and see while I played. Your presence made a world of difference to me tonight.

Click here to watch the music video for 'Don't Bring Me Down' on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

Now is one of those times. I just feel 'bleh' and nothing really sounded that good to me tonight.

The lyrics are actually the polar opposite of how I feel at the moment, and maybe that's why it is appealing to me so much. Hell, I'm honestly starting to smile a little as I am listening to this. I don't think so.

The track was inspired by "Trouble" T. Roy of Heavy D. and the Boyz, who fell from a balcony to his death in 1990. Pete Rock had this to say about the creation of this classic track during a 2007 interview with Village Voice:

'I had a friend of mine that passed away, and it was a shock to the community. I was kind of depressed when I made it. And to this day, I can't believe I made it through, the way I was feeling. I guess it was for my boy. When I found the record by Tom Scott, basically I just heard something incredible that touched me and made me cry. It had such a beautiful bassline, and I started with that first. I found some other sounds and then heard some sax in there and used that. Next thing you know, I have a beautiful beat made. When I mixed the song down, I had Charlie Brown from Leaders of the New School in the session with me, and we all just started crying.'

Click here to watch the music video on YouTube

Click here to listen to the song on YouTube

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

Day 571 - SumKid - Breakfast on the Moon

SumKid might be partially responsible for that, because he has reminded me of why I fell in love with rap in the first place during the 'Golden Age' of hip hop.

SumKid creates some of the greatest hip hop that I have ever heard, and one of the key ingredients to what makes him so great is how well he tells a story with his words. I don't want to ruin this track by giving the plot away, but here's a snippet of the lyrics that should give you an idea of the mental images he's capable of producing:

So, we sat on the porch drinking tea in the sun
While our young'uns played on the dust road tracking mud
Mud through our house
Mud from the road
Scraped through to the single room
So, we fuss a little bit like we really gave a damn
But, we was happy we could buy our own food
And when the sun set low
Then we put 'em off to bed
And climb on up to the roof
And I point at the sky
And say 'Baby if I die tonight
Can We have breakfast on the moon?

If you have ever loved hip hop music, you owe it to yourself to go check this guy out. 'Breakfast on the Moon' would be a fantastic place to start, but I haven't heard anything by this guy that isn't solid.

Click here to listen to 'Breakfast on the Moon' on thesixtyone.com

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.

Not Me. I feel like I was born at precisely the right time. I have my reasons for believing this, but I haven't given myself much time to go into details, because I was 55 minutes away from the midnight deadline when I started typing this out.

I grew up in an era where people called a radio station DJ if they were trying to figure out the name of a song. Now we have Google.

I remember what it was like to rack up expensive phone bills while trying to keep in touch with people that didn't even live that far away. Now it costs me nothing extra outside of my normal internet bill to send e-mails to my friend Mo in Shanghai, China!

I was born at the right time. I'm old enough to know how things were before microwave ovens, cell phones and the internet, but I'm young enough (at heart) to appreciate these 'new' technologies instead of fearing the change that comes along with them.

Perhaps the most amazing thing to me as a musician is remembering a time (not long ago) where you were never going to get anyone to hear your songs unless you were signed to a record label. Now we have the internet, and a worldwide audience can hear your songs instantly through websites like Song Fight!, thesixtyone.com and Myspace. Granted, people may noy pay attention to your particular band when there are millions of other choices out there, but my point is this: The technology is there. It wasn't even an OPTION until recently. '

'Please Listen to My Demo' comes from a time when the internet didn't exist yet. EPMD couldn't just put their tracks on Myspace and direct people to go there. Like anyone, they were at the mercy of the record labels if they wanted to be heard.

I may never make music for a living, but I am very thankful that I live in an era where I can share my music online with anyone that cares to hear it.

Click here to listen to 'Please Listen to My Demo' YouTube
Click here to watch a live performance of 'Please Listen to My Demo' on YouTube.

ROCK!

Glenn Case

Go see what Andy chose today
Go see what Heuristics Inc. chose today
Go see what Max chose today
Go see what Niveous chose today
Go see what prayformojo chose today
Go see what Rabid Garfunkel chose today
Go see what Rachael chose today
Go see what Susana chose today
Go see what Tuuur chose today
Go see what William chose today
Go see what Woordenaar chose today
Here's my choices sorted by Artist, by album cover, and by year.
